Lake Como

The breathtaking views soothe the soul and encourage contemplation

Lake Como, also known as Lario, is a natural lake situated in a subalpine region that belongs to the provinces of Como and Lecco. It has three distinct parts, commonly called branches, which are the Como and Lecco basins in the south, and the Colico basin in the north, near Milan. The two southern basins have a similar shape. Lake Como is the deepest lake in Italy.

Lake Como has been a favorite destination for the wealthy since ancient times, and it remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The Huffington Post named it the most beautiful lake in the world for its microclimate and historical surroundings.

Lake Como lies between the Po Valley and the Alps, and it has a complex shape that resembles an inverted Y or a man. The lake is a natural fjord that cuts deeply into the mountainous terrain of the pre-alpine area of Como and Bergamo. The shoreline has a varied landscape with slopes, cliffs and gentle hills facing the lake.

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, thanks to its strategic location. The main towns are Como and Lecco, two municipalities located at the end of the two southern branches. Como is a city with a rich history that influenced the whole region; today, it has the most valuable cultural heritage of Lario.
